Syd Buchannan (they/them)
Clinical Therapist Intern
TLDR: I think you’ll find me to have a nurturing and nonjudgmental presence, to be a gentle yet direct communicator, and to have a goofy and eclectic personality - I am a black, biracial, queer therapist that sees individual healing as a means of collective liberation. Together, we can explore the systems, relationships, experiences, and feelings that are impacting you the most, and move towards deeper connection with yourself and others. This is a space where you can come as you are.
Availability: Monday 1:30 pm-7pm, Wednesday 10am-4:30 pm, and Friday 10am- 3:30pm in Decatur or virtually
Do you feel like you're stuck in emotional distress, overwhelm, exhaustion and struggling to know where to go from here? Maybe there are things in your life you want to change, ways you want to grow, but you’re not sure how to start. When you’re navigating these feelings alone, they can begin to feel too heavy to carry. Whether you're struggling with depression, adjusting to a life change, concerned about your substance use, or healing from trauma, I believe that together, we can begin to untangle the overwhelm and find a path towards healing.
I’m Syd (they/them), a black, biracial, queer graduate student therapy intern in my final year of my Master of Social Work program. I work under the close supervision of a licensed clinician, so you get the benefit of both my growing expertise and experienced oversight.
My approach is grounded in self-compassion and critical awareness. With a background in sociology, I pay close attention to the social structures that fail us, and I bring an honest, caring lens to how we, as individuals, learn to survive and adapt within them. I will never shy away from naming injustice. My approach is intersectional feminist and decolonial at its core.
I am LGBTQ affirming, nonmonogamous and kink informed, and I am specializing in the treatment of adverse religious experiences, particularly the effects of community rejection, fear-based teaching, purity culture, and spiritual abuse. I am also specializing in substance use disorder treatment from a harm reduction perspective.
My approach to care is trauma informed and person-centered. I want to collaborate with you - centering your own wants, needs, and values; I believe you are the expert of your own experience, but I am a guide to help you feel more aligned with your authentic self. I integrate body-based, behavioral, as well as cognitive interventions. Which in direct terms means, we will adjust our methods depending on what you need. I want to empower your voice, so that I can support your recovery.
I believe that recovery is possible and looks different for everyone, and together we can start to identify what it looks like for you.

I am a parent to a tiny, 7 year old, rescue dog named Pepper Ann, that is incredibly misbehaved (we are working on it). But I will defend her to a fault because I love her with my whole heart.
I have a cancer stellium (sun, rising, and mercury). But I have a virgo moon, and most people read me as an earth sign at first. So - do with that information what you will.
