Geek Therapy is a therapeutic approach that centers elements of geek and pop culture to facilitate self-exploration and identity, skills development, and support over all mental health well-being. At Grounded Wellbeing, our resident geek therapist, Lance, uses fantasy and play to work through what brings their clients to counseling, often utilizing games, or discussing themes in their favorite cartoons and anime. Geek Therapy recognizes and leverages the strong connections to various aspects of geek culture, such as video games, comics, movies, TV shows, fantasy literature, and other forms of entertainment. Geek Therapy can also be conducted in group settings, where individuals with similar interests come together to explore shared themes and support each other's personal growth.

Geek Therapy

  • What can I expect during a session centered around Geek Therapy?

A Geek Therapy session is entirely unique to each and every person. To begin, you’ll discuss and go over your favorite media, such as tv/anime, movies, video games, tabletop games, etc. From there, you and the counselor will explore ways to bring that into the counseling space and draw connections between your interests and your life. This can be done in a variety of ways, such as playing a journaling RPG together, building out your perfect world in Minecraft or creating D&D characters that represent different aspects of you or watching media together. Think of it as doing what you love to do for fun with someone else who occasionally drops in connections that tie it into your life.

  • How do I know if Geek Therapy is right for me?

Do you find yourself frequently daydreaming about what it’d be like if you lived in your favorite book series? Or how life would be different if you had superpowers and magic? Maybe talking to others about your feelings directly feels too intimidating and scary. Then Geek Therapy may be right for you! Through discussing your special interests, we create a safe space for you to process and grow at your own pace while making it fun.

  • How can Geek Therapy support my therapeutic goals?

Geek Therapy can support you in various ways and various methods! It’s all about what your goals are and what works best for you. The balance between geek and therapy is tailored to you and your needs. For example, an individual who is looking to explore their identity can talk about different characters they identify with and how those narratives resonate with their personal experiences. This is a powerful tool for self-enquiry, identity exploration, and empowerment. Additionally, Geek Therapy can support individuals who are looking for support in their interpersonal relationships by offering an affirming and supportive space to build skills through shared interests.
