June INTERN Spotlight: Shela Nguyen (they/them)
Introducing, Shela!
Tell us a little bit about yourself!
Nice to meet you! My name is Shela Nguyen (they/them). I am a queer, non-binary, first-generation Vietnamese American. My interest in mental health started with a sense of curiosity about myself and why I think/react the way I do. This sense of curiosity, a growing interest in psychology/mental health, and a desire to help and connect with others eventually led me to pursue an MA in counseling.
When did you first know that you wanted to pursue this career path/how have your interests and passions developed over time?
My interest in mental health started with a sense of curiosity about myself and why I think/react the way I do. This sense of curiosity, a growing interest in psychology/mental health, and a desire to help and connect with others eventually led me to pursue an MA in counseling.
Do you have any creative outlets or interests? Tell us about them!
When I'm not busy with my studies, I love cuddling with my cat (Miso!), spending time with my friends (exploring the city, trying new restaurants, going dancing, etc.), shooting photography, listening to music + singing, and reading-- to name a few hobbies!
Which of GWB’s values do you feel connected to? Why?
GWB’s values of vulnerability and community resonate with me the most. Vulnerability with ourselves and others unlocks the opportunities to learn about ourselves and others, and to live freely. Vulnerability also makes room for connection and community building. Having my people in my corner and being there for them is truly special to me. There's a beauty in people who were once strangers coming together, welcoming each other with open arms, and building lifelong connections. This, in my opinion, is the meaning of life.
What is your go-to coffee or tea order?
My go-to order is tied between an iced dirty matcha with oat milk or! an iced dirty chai with oat milk. I literally can't choose between the two (there's no picking between two drinks that are both baddies).
