Reiki originated in early twentieth-century Japan and is a spiritual healing practice that can help return us to balanced functioning on every level —physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, even social — regardless of our age or state of health. Unlike conventional medicine, Reiki does not attack disease. Rather, Reiki supports our wellbeing and strengthens our natural ability to heal by encouraging balance [1]. Reiki practitioners channel universal life force energy (aka Chi or Prana) by directing the flow of energy from their hands to different parts of the body that may be imbalanced. Oftentimes, Reiki services are offered at places in the community that are not always gender-affirming and may not be trauma-informed. To address this, we feel offering reiki sessions at our office is incredibly beneficial. Our providers are affirming and trauma-informed, and as such, do not use touch during Reiki sessions (as many places or practitioners will do). Our practitioners channel the energy and direct the flow to the client without the need for hands-on touch.

Reiki

What is Reiki?

Pamela Miles, a Medical Reiki master and Medical Reiki expert, shares that Reiki gently encourages a person's system toward its own unique balance. Reiki has the ability to potentially benefit anyone, whether they are feeling balanced and want to stay that way or are addressing a specific concern. The benefits are personal, both because people are imbalanced in different ways and because they notice and value different changes [1].

How can Reiki help you?

During a Reiki session, the practitioner acts as a channel for this universal life energy, directing it through their hands to the recipient's body. This is believed to help remove blockages or imbalances in the recipient's energy field, thus promoting healing on physical, emotional, and spiritual levels. Reiki is often used as a complementary therapy alongside conventional medical treatments. Many individuals report feeling a sense of relaxation, peace, and well-being after receiving Reiki treatments.

What can I expect during a Reiki session?

During a Reiki session at Grounded Wellbeing, clients are encouraged to simply come as they are, embracing their individuality and unique needs. Upon arrival, they are greeted with a neuro-affirming environment featuring soft lighting and gentle music, setting the stage for relaxation and healing. One of the key aspects of a Reiki session at Grounded Wellbeing is the honoring of body autonomy, where clients are respected and encouraged to communicate their preferences and boundaries throughout the session. During the session, the practitioner may inquire if there are particular areas of focus or concern that the client would like to address. This ensures that the energy work is tailored to meet the individual's needs and goals.

As the practitioner channels energy, clients may experience sensations such as tingling or warmth in areas where the energy is directed. Some individuals may even visualize colors, each representing different aspects of healing and balance.

At the conclusion of the session, the practitioner may offer insights or findings based on their observations and the client's energy response. This gentle guidance can provide clients with valuable reflections and awareness to support their ongoing journey of self-discovery and well-being. While there's no set rule for when to return for another session, the average interval is typically every 2-3 months, allowing for continued support and maintenance of energetic balance and harmony.

Do I need to do anything to prepare for my first Reiki session?

Come as you are! Wear something comfortable, as your relaxation is paramount. You might want to bring a water bottle as well.

You can also prepare mentally, emotionally, and/or spiritually as much or as little as you'd like. Kathy, our Reiki Practioner, recommends coming with an open mind and preparing her space by cleaning the space and ensuring that the energy is cleansed. Upon arrival in the space, you’ll notice that the room feels neutral yet supportive! As a shared office space, the room has seating options and inclusive decor. The lighting can also be adjusted to your level of comfort, but generally, the room will be dim with little to no outside light as best as possible. Scents should be minimal if present at all. I use an essential oils smudging spray that most clients describe as "clean" smelling.

During the session, you will lie on a padded massage table with clean linens and a standard-sized pillow.  A bolster pillow for under the knees or feet will also be available for added comfort. Kathy plays Native American flute music with an underlying synthesizer that holds the rhythm. This plays over the speaker while you are on the table.

What will we talk about before getting started

If you are is new to Reiki or Kathy’s services, she will explain to you what the process looks like and what to expect. Please feel free to ask Kathy anything – she honors your sovereignty and autonomy and wants to meet you at the place you are currently holding space. That being said, please know that Kathy’s Reiki service is provided without the need for touch. You can also let Kathy know if there’s a specific area you'd like to focus energy on (physical, emotional, mental, or spiritual going on). If you want Kathy to review her findings from the session, she asks that you let her know beforehand so that she can save time at the end to do so.

What will I feel like during the session?

Some people feel tingling, warmth, or buzzing sensations, if they feel anything at all.  Some people may have visualizations of what is being healed, like moments in time or colors that might correspond to chakras being balanced.  The goal of any energy healing session is to activate the parasympathetic nervous system. The thought is that generally the more relaxed a person is, the deeper and more seamlessly integrated the healing can occur.

What does follow-up look like?

The most common response from people after the time on the table has ended is that they feel "lighter" and "relaxed.”  Some people carry that energy for great lengths of time - more than a month - and for others, it lasts a few days or a few hours.  There is no right or wrong way to move forward after a session. The frequency of appointments may also vary from person to person; for those in deep healing work or tumultuous periods of life, they may seek Reiki weekly.  Most people come once every two to three months, and at minimum once every six months for energetic maintenance.
