Getting Started

Taking the first step towards seeking therapy is a courageous and transformative decision. Whether you're facing specific challenges, seeking support for your mental health, or simply exploring ways to enhance your overall quality of life, therapy is a valuable tool that can provide guidance, healing, and self-discovery.

Here are a few common questions individuals have when looking to start therapy. From understanding the different types of therapy and finding the right therapist to addressing common misconceptions and navigating the logistics of your first session, we hope to demystify the process and help you make informed choices about your mental health care.

We're here to support you every step of the way — please reach out if you have any additional questions, comments or concerns.

What is therapy like?

At Grounded Wellbeing, attachment and relationally based therapy is at the foundation of what we do. This means that the client-therapist relationship is based on developing or rebuilding trust and centers on expressing emotions. We believe that fostering secure and supportive connections can empower you to navigate the complexities of gender affirmation.

Our therapists will work collaboratively with you to identify your goals, concerns, and preferences. They will respect your autonomy and empower you to take an active role in your own healing and growth. At our practice, therapy is a personalized and compassionate journey towards mental and emotional well-being. It's a safe space where you can be your authentic self, receive guidance, and work collaboratively with a skilled therapist to navigate life's challenges and celebrate your strengths and resilience.

Our team is well-trained in understanding the unique challenges and experiences faced by marginalized communities, including LGBTQ+ individuals, and are committed to providing culturally competent care.

Is it normal to feel nervous about starting therapy?

Yes, that’s perfectly normal! Embarking on a therapeutic journey is a significant step. It's human nature to have a range of emotions, including nervousness, before your first session. Therapy often involves vulnerability, and discussing personal topics with someone you just met, which naturally makes some people feel nervous. It's important to recognize and acknowledge your nervousness, as it's a valid part of the therapy process.

Recognize your courage in seeking help and remember that you are taking an important step toward your well-being. Be gentle with yourself. It's okay to feel nervous; it doesn't mean there's something wrong with you.

What can I expect during the first session?

During your first therapy session, you can expect a compassionate and structured introduction to the therapeutic process. It’s important that you complete all of our onboarding paperwork prior to your first session — this ensures that your therapist has all of the information needed to prepare for your session. We’ll spend a few moments reviewing confidentiality, mandated reporting, and we may ask some follow up questions to the responses you shared in your intake paperwork. From there, we can begin to explore some of the issues or emotions you're facing. This exploration is typically a gentle introduction to the therapeutic conversation and aims to create a foundation for future sessions. Remember, this is your time!

As we wrap up our first session, we will set clear expectations about the frequency and duration of sessions, as well as the fees and cancellation policies. This ensures that you have a mutual understanding of how therapy will proceed. At the end of the session, you'll usually schedule your next appointment, or discuss setting up a reoccurring appointment.

Do you take insurance?

We do not take insurance directly at our practice, however, we have partnered with Mentaya to help our clients save money on therapy. Use the tool at the bottom of this page to see if you qualify for reimbursement for our services. Mentaya helps streamline the process of OON benefit reimbursement.

Do you offer sliding scale?

Yes! We offer sliding scale and equity pricing. At Grounded Wellbeing, we leverage an equity pricing model to center equity and collective care. With this system, individuals are encouraged to honor their own financial needs which no one else can accurately measure. We have developed varying scales for different services and groups. Please ask your provider about this during your consult call or phone screen.

What makes our practice stand out?

We are queer/trans operated, and are passionate about providing trauma informed care to all people and specialize in working with the LGBTQ+ community. We specialize in providing affirming care to queer, trans, and gender-expansive folks. We believe in the power of healing within community and work towards providing a brave and affirming space for our clients to explore current challenges. In addition to traditional psychotherapy, we also offer holistic and wellness services, such as EMDR, clinical hypnotherapy, gender affirming services, energy alignment, and more. In addition, our space is accessible, and has gender neutral restrooms.
